Phu Quy Island off south central Binh Thuan Province has been isolated for almost two weeks due to strong winds caused by the southwest monsoon and tropical low pressure on the East Sea.
There has been no boat travel between the island and Phan Thiet Town, more than 107 kilometers away, since last Monday. Normally there is a boat that ferries between the island and mainland every two days. The island is running out of fresh food and fuel. Four passenger and cargo ships, bound for the island, have been stranded. Huynh Van Hung, chairman of Phu Quy Island, said officials of the island have been stuck in the mainland. It’s their summer vacation but hundreds of the island’s students, who stay in the mainland during their sessions, cannot return home. Strong winds are forecast to last for at least three more days. Hung said he is going to ask the provincial government to seek help from the Ministry of Defense, the Navy and the High Command of Military Zone 7 to use special means of transportation to bring food and necessities to the island. Due to the winds, several ships of Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai and Khanh Hoa provinces along the central coast have sought refuge in Phu Quy Island.
